Kambo is one of the most powerful medicines in the world, and is one of the many amazing gifts of the Amazon jungle. But unlike some of its more well known medicines, such as Ayahuasca and San Pedro, it is a non-psychoactive and is completely legal in our country. Depending on the tribe, it is called Kambo, named in honor of the shaman attributed to discovering it, or Sapo, which means “frog” in Spanish, as the medicine comes from the venom of the poisonous tree frog ‘Phyllomedusa Bicolor’ or ‘Giant Monkey frog.’
It is introduced to the human system by way of “gates,” which the practitioner creates through small burns at the surface of the skin. Small “points” of the medicine are then applied onto these openings by which the medicine enters directly through the lymphatic system. Through this connection to the human being, the medicine works through its own intelligence to completely match and respond to the needs of each unique individual.
In an article by Giovanni Lattanzi, a forerunner of Kambo’s Western scientific research, he writes:
Due to the presence of nine [bio-active] peptides, Kambo is one of the strongest natural antibiotics and anesthetics found in the world and one of the strongest, natural ways to empower our immune system. The Kambo treatments have short and long term effects. Short term—the effects are a state of alertness, good mood, enhanced resistance to tiredness, hunger and thirst, the capacity to easily concentrate and focus, and a still mind which can last for several days or weeks. Long term—Kambo empowers the immune system, overcomes fatigue, and improves one’s state of overall health. With Kambo, we have the opportunity to wake up the body to its full natural potential… It simply wakes up the body’s organs, endocrine system, and defense systems to their natural functions.
And, Marcelo Gomes, another pioneer to bring this medicine to western attention, states:
Kambo establishes a chakra realignment, a mark for organic and psychological reorganization, from which the person changes their patterns of health. Kambo is a fire medicine. When combined with the water that is drunk before the treatment, an alchemical transformation happens and old toxins are released through vomiting or urgent defecation. This cleansing process works not only on a physical level but also on a spiritual one. The frog, connecting us with our natural wisdom, mirrors our negative habits, showing us what we should avoid and what we could do in order to improve our condition. During the Kambo treatments, we receive insights. The messages given by the Kambo can be very simple and intuitive. Kambo unfolds the changes we need to make, in an effortless, natural way. Many of us think, ‘I want to be better, ‘I want to stop smoking,’ etc. But when we try to reach a certain result with our willpower, we are actually fighting. We’ve done so for many generations. With Kambo, a natural wisdom is taking over our healing process. We know without thinking what we have to do or not to do in a certain situation. We become able to drop unhealthy habits and fixed ideas. In my experience, ideas are often the main obstacle, blocking us from our healing. Kambo affords us the energy we usually don’t have but that we need for our spiritual journey. Removing the cloud of panema around our energy field, we become more open to receive from Spirit.
“Panema is a tribal term used to describe the dark, heavy or negative energy which descends from a disconnect to Spirit, and manifests as bad luck, illness, depression, laziness, confusion/lack of clarity, or simply feeling lost. By removing panema, the tribes believe a person becomes free from the feeling of powerlessness and is able to move forward again.” (Simon Scott, Master Kambo Practitioner and my teacher of this medicine)
The medicine’s powerful ability to lift panema is due to the essence of the frogs from which it is cultivated. Because of their powerful venom, they have no inherent enemies in nature, and thus do not have fear in their experiential field. So even when the shamans go to gather them they’re just hanging out in the trees! they don’t resist at all or try to flee, and besides, they are always returned unharmed. And as fear is associated with the root chakra—when this chakra is imbalanced, we often feel completely stuck, unable to move forward, as though we were literally rooted to the floor beneath us. We begin to feel stagnant, and in nature stagnation is the root of all dis-ease—physical, mental, and emotional. But by connecting with the powerful energy of Kambo, it confers to the participant the powerful affect of breaking this often paralyzing grip of fear even in its subtler forms such as self-doubt, anxiety, hopelessness, apathy, and so forth.
But as this medicine is a venom, it is certainly no easy treatment, as shamanic medicines are never “sugar coated.” It will require the participant to tap into deep aspects of herself or himself—finding deep reservoirs of inner strength & courage to overcome personal fears, and to come into the practice of being fully embodied as highly visceral sensations bombard the body—all while cultivating centeredness and presence in the process… for without the challenge, how would we become stronger? And this is why it is often referred to as “Warrior Medicine.” After all, the tribes primarily used it for defeating illness, but also to strengthen their hunters before a big hunt, as it acts as a performance enhancer—heightening and improving all the senses; decreasing the human scent; optimizing strength, speed, agility, and endurance; as well as quieting the mental chatter so that one may act more intuitively and from inspired action.
And as this is a powerful cleanse, expect an energetic purging of some sort. Many people experience a release through vomiting, but also an urgent evacuation of the bowels, shivering, or sweating, and I have also witnessed sneezing, persistent yawning, crying, laughing, itching, fatigue, and so forth. These are some of the temporary discomforts we may undergo in exchange for the wealth of healing, clarity, strength, and reconnection we are bestowed for working with the medicine. And because this energetic cleansing process can often be a strenuous one, it is quite common to be laden with a deep tiredness afterward. And so it is advisable to free up the day for rest, to set aside some time for self-reflection, and for listening for Kambo’s personal messages to us.
WHY THE CONSECUTVE DAYS OF WORK?
Working with the medicine for 2 – 3 days consecutively gives it the opportunity to accumulate in our system, enhancing its potency—Kambo’s effect will be strengthened and more pronounced, and the depth of cleansing and detoxification will be increased—optimizing levels of clarity, intuitive connection, physical strength and mental focus, sensory perception, and so forth. Kambo is a very intense form of CLEANSE AND DETOXIFICATION, so we might use let’s say, a Juice Cleanse or Liver Cleanse, as an example of accumulating the effects of Kambo. For, doing 1 day of Kambo can be likened to 1 day on a Liver Cleanse, and doing 2 days of Kambo may be like 3 days on a Liver Cleanse, while 3 days of Kambo may be like 5 days on a Liver Cleanse. This is NOT to compare the process, yield, and impact of the two systems, but more as a way of reflecting the overall depth of work. When one partakes in an intensive detoxification program such as a Liver Cleanse, 3 days of work is significantly more penetrating than 1, and 5 days with such a program profoundly more thorough and impactful than even 3.
So consecutive treatments of Kambo allows one to experience a more thorough and impactful program, yet through the safe and optimal method of coursing it over a few days—for each person will have a kind of natural threshold with the medicine, and it is quite difficult to work with doses beyond that threshold in one treatment sitting—especially without the undesirable, and often severe, side effects of doses beyond one’s threshold. Additionally, working with Kambo for consecutive days creates the time to integrate the work of this important medicine, and allows us to experience the much needed rest and rejuvenation so many of us do not regularly make time to enjoy. This is similar to any cleansing program one decides to undertake—the more one allows the body to access the healing of the parasympathetic nervous system, the more the regeneration and rejuvenation effects can take place on all levels—physical, mental, and emotional, i.e. more healing impact. And furthermore, for those working with Kambo for the first time, please note that the first day is generally a “test” dose, and so additional inoculations are strongly suggested.
EFFECTS AFTER THE CEREMONY:
There is generally the effect of less mental chatter. You may notice your conscious awareness more prominent and the voice of your heart stronger, while the voice of your analytical filter is quieter. You might also notice less judgment and criticism, and more observation, curiosity, and humor. There is a deeper connection to your body and your inner voice, so your eating habits and routines might change, and the body will generally be super strong—if you have a regular physical routine for instance, you will notice a definite increase in focus, stamina, agility, strength. I don’t want to focus too much on this part, because these are the unique gifts that Kambo will give you—I don’t wanna ruin the surprise! ☺ I suggest journaling your observations, rather than trying to “make sense” of them—it may take a bit of adjustment time if you’re not used to living especially intuitively.
